It's been forever!
It's been way too long since I posted on this blog. I need to get my rear in gear. For those of you who read, thanks for not giving up on me! :) I've just had way too much life happening lately. I try to post more photoish things soon.

Trying a new lighting technique
Last night I set up the camera for some product shots and decided to try a lighting technique I'd read about in one of my magazines. This photo was shot at a shutter speed of 15 seconds (probably longer than necessary, but it worked) at an aperture of 7.1. I used a background of black muslin to minimize reflections.
You set your camera up and check the focus. Then turn off the lights and start the capture. While the cameras shutter is open you slowly move a small flashlight (I used an led pin light) around, lighting each flower. Then you do the take another shot and light the vase.
You can try several directions of light for different effects. You then pick your favorite flower and vase shots and blend them in photoshop.
This is by no means perfect, but for my first time, I'm happy with the results. I did learn not to move the vase, which we did a little, because it causes the blending to not match up correctly.

New Poster Software
As a photographer, I'm always on the look-out for cool new effects I can use. A recent issue of one of my photo magazines brought my attention to a program called Poster Forge. I downloaded the free version so I could play with it and see what it's like. I used a shot I took of an eagle in Alton, Illinois. Here's the result:

Not to shabby. If I buy the full version it will take off the poster forge watermark in the corner. The downside is that this is it. It's not overly creative and I think I'd get bored with the same 3 templates over and over. It also looks like that if I want to actually print these as a poster, I have to buy the accompanying software for printing as well. I'm not sold yet.
